Style Wars
1983, USA, 69 min, Documental
Director: Henry Chalfant, Tony Silver
Interpretes: Cap, Frosty Freeze, Kase 2, Edward I. Koch, Crazy Legs, Mare, Seen, Skeme...
Filmed in New York in 1982, when hip hop was still in its infancy, STYLE WARS documents a number of young graffiti artists who were transforming the city with their unique art. These artists created a new visual language that was borne out of the hip hop subculture and, using the city's dilapidated subway system as a canvas, let the rest of New York know about it. Unfortunately, graffiti meant vandalism to Mayor Ed Koch, the NYPD, and the MTA, all of whom did their best to oppose the burgeoning movement.
STYLE WARS has become a cultural emblem and ranks among the best hip hop films ever made. Embraced by the culture it depicts as well as by mainstream America, STYLE WARS was one of the first shots fired in the hip hop revolution that took the country by storm.

Space Is the Place (1974)
Sci-fi, blaxploitation, cosmic free-jazz and radical race politics combine when Sun Ra returns to earth (Oakland, circa 1972) in his yellow music-powered space ship to battle for the future of the black race and offer an "alter-destiny" to those who will join him.
In 1972, when film producer Jim Newman approached Sun Ra to produce a 30 minute documentary for PBS, and with director John Coney at the helm it would be transformed into a different project entirely. With a collectively written script which was only loosely adhered to, SPACE IS THE PLACE would ultimately become a visual embodiment of Sun Ra's Afro-Egyptian myth of salvation in outer space, as well as a snapshot of the cultural landslide and the ideological crossroads of the civil rights movement occurring at the end of the Vietnam War.
Intentionally created as an homage to the low budget science fiction films of the 50's and 60's, the special effects, outrageous plot line and apocalyptic message harmonize with the otherworldly improvised score and the climactic live performance by one of the most innovative, prolific and profound groups in jazz history, Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Myth-Science Solar Akrestra.
"An artifact of a time when the hangover of the late 1960's met the disillusioned 1970's; black power and free jazz collided with the fashion sense of SUPERFLY. SPACE IS THE PLACE is the PUTNEY SWOPE of jazzfilms." - Jon Pareles, THE NEW YORK TIMES
